Is it possible that house dust mites, or HDM, are causing your allergies? The answer is yes. Dust mites live most of their lives in mattresses as well as other warm dusty hiding spots in your home. Asthma and allergy relief can be as easy as keeping your home clean and controlling the humidity levels in your home. However it is important to note that you may be able to control the dust mite population, but not necessarily get rid of them completely.

The three most common species of house dust mites, Dermatophagoides farinae, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, and Euroglyphus maynei, are the most common causes of rhinitis and asthma worldwide. House dust mites feed on shed human skin and comfortably multiply in homes with at least 60% humidity.

You can buy acaricides, a home product that can help you prevent asthma and rhinitis by reducing the population of dust mites in your home. However according to an article written by Gentile, et al, in the May 2013 issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice, there needs to be more research to support initial findings that temperature control or the use of acaricides will significantly reduce asthma or rhinitis symptoms in adults or children.

There are certain species of dust mites that thrive in some work environments and food storage spaces, increasing the need for allergy and asthma relief even outside the home. Acarus silo lives inside grains while Lepidoglyphus destructor live on the surface of the grain and around areas with debris. These storage mites can be found in grain stores, flour mills, cheese storage areas, animal feed. Storage mites thrive in highly warm and humid areas where mold is also likely to be present.

So what can you do to stay ahead of the game when it comes asthma prevention and allergy relief? Keeping your home neat and clean can give you some control. In addition, pay close attention to how you store your grains, flours, and other stored foods.

The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice is an official journal of the AAAAI, focusing on practical information for the practicing clinician.
