An Interview With Dr. Z:

What is your job title?
Allergist and Immunologist, Founder of the Riviera Allergy Medical Center

Would you please describe your organization (its goal, size, structure, etc.)
Riviera Allergy Medical Center was founded in 2003, with electronic medical records since day one. We are located in the Riviera Village in South Redondo Beach, and our doors are open Monday through Saturday. We specialize as an outpatient clinic for patients of all ages with asthma, allergies and problems of the immune system. Services include testing for environmental, food and skin allergies, identification of triggers for asthma and sinus disease, chronic cough, nasal congestion and itching eyes. We treat environmental and insect venom allergies with immunotherapy (“allergy shots”), prevent severe (anaphylactic) allergic reactions, and use cutting edge asthma control.

Why did you get into this field? Did someone/something significant impact choosing this career?
I was highly influenced by my father and his career as a hospital minister. While working in a hospital as an aide during high school vacations, I was impressed with the medical staff’s dedication to improve patients’ life quality and fight childhood diseases. Since I was young, I’ve always had a fascination with a medical understanding of the human body. Working in the medical field provides me with a sense of fulfillment because I feel like I am truly making a difference in patients lives. I really enjoy helping people get diagnosed and find the curative or at least controling treatment for their allergy symptoms and manifestations, such as sinus infections, postnasal drip and asthma attacks. It has been my life goal to study the different ways one can treat diseases in the body and improve quality of life .

What about your company makes it great?
We have really first class people working in the RAMC team. We are very strict with our hiring process, and focus on finding the one in ten medical professionals that have both, the experience and the compassion, to help our patients. Our facility is hypoallergenic, equipped with Wifi access and even offers a kids play room. We’ve worked hard over the years to make Riviera Allergy Medical Center a very friendly and warm atmosphere.

What do you observe most people in your field doing badly that you think you do well?
We take time for a detailed interview to understand the background of the patient’s medical condition, including genetic, environmental and circumstantial factors. We use both personalized diagnostic tests and individual decision making regarding the patients’ optimal treatment plan. Our longer than average office visits allow for customized explanation of the medical condition and a comprehensive discussion of treatment options.

What’s unique about the service that you provide?
We are passionate about our patients’ wellbeing and strive to improve their quality of life. Our forte is customized patient education and treatment planning. We teach European and American medical students, and reach out to parents and teachers in the community regarding prevention of potentially life threatening allergic diseases. I have had medical training in both the U.S. and Europe. With an extensive background in internal medicine and double board certification in Pediatrics and Allergy/Immunology, I feel very comfortable seeing patients at all ages.

What are the most satisfying and the most frustrating parts of your work?
The most satisfying part of our work is improving our patients’ quality of life, such as an asthmatic being able to exercise without shortness of breath, identifying and eliminating triggers of allergic conditions like a food allergy as trigger of eczema or abdominal pain, a pollen allergy as the reason for chronic sinus headaches, and metal allergy as the source of burning skin irritation. Furthermore, educating our patients leads to a better understanding of their medical condition, resulting in symptom control and prevention of disease. Frustrations occur with time-consuming battles with medical insurances to get tests and treatments approved for optimal patients’ care and wellbeing.

What professional associations or organizations are useful to belong to in this field?
American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (AAAAI)
American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI)
