A contact allergen is any item or substance that has been in contact with your skin or mucous membrane and has caused a reaction know as urticaria (also known as hives) or dermatitis. The development of urticaria, or hives, can be traced back to proteins in items like eggs, semen, animal saliva, etc. Dermatitis is generally caused by chemicals like fragrances, cheap metals, latex, etc.

Skin allergy treatment for dermatitis begins with a series of patch tests. The patch tests consist of a series of chemicals placed on your back for a period of 48 hours. You and your allergist will look for any skin reactions during that time period. The patch tests can contain universally available chemicals or special test patches can be created to monitor your skin’s reactions to various chemical products in your home.

Urticaria, or hives, can be tested immediately through skin pricks. A solution of the protein causing the suspected allergic reaction is injected underneath the skin. What your allergist will look for is an immediate, itchy, red, raised area on the skin.

One of the most common causes of dermatitis is nickel, a metal found in costume jewelry.   Cobalt and potassium dichromate, also found in cheap metals, can cause an allergic reaction as well. Aside from contact with jewelry, exposure to nickel is prevalent in hairdressing and machining industries. Regular contact with rubber and natural latex, hair dyes, fragrances, skin creams, and biocides used in these industries can cause allergic reactions.
